The 32-year-old from Swindon upset his dining partner with ‘boorish’ behaviour in the Riverside pub in Lechlade, rowed with the manager and was then arrested after using a fire extinguisher to attack a pensioner who had told him to calm down. Howell, who has a lengthy criminal record, admitted assaulting 66-year-old Martin Chapman, and was sentenced to 15 months jail suspended for two years. ENGLISH Heritage have denied trying to cover up the dumping of asbestos-contaminated topsoil just yards from Stonehenge. The asbestos was made during development of the £27 million visitors’ centre which saw the demolition of the old 1969 building. It has emerged contractors discovered brick-sized lumps of asbestos within soil used to landscape the area. It resulted in a huge after-dark clean-up operation. But English Heritage insist they were not trying to cover up the incident. (WDP)
