A HEAVY goods vehicle spectacularly left the M4 this morning and ended up in an embankment.
The incident happened shortly before 6.30am on the eastbound carriageway close to junction 16.
The 35-year-old driver was taken by land ambulance to Great Western Hospital after suffering a back injury.
The hard shoulder has been closed near the Swindon turn-off while the recovery operation takes place.
Traffic is flowing well enough, other than some rubber-necking slowdown at the scene.
It is the second time in 24 hours that the borough has seen a lorry come a cropper following yesterday morning’s incident at the Wootton Bassett Road bridge.
The area was blocked for much of the day after the oversized vehicle struck the bridge and toppled over.
